UW Medicine Safety-Related Drug Alerts!

Safety-Related Drug Alerts! are summaries of drug safety briefings that may be associated with health consequences for patients. Included are briefings regarding prescription and non-prescription drugs, medical devices, and products regulated as food supplements. "Safety-Related Drug Alerts!" may originate from the FDA, pharmaceutical manufacturers, or other sources deemed reliable.

Computerized database that houses Canadian suspected adverse reactions which have been reported to Health Canada's CADRMP. The CADRMP AR database only contains reports of reactions that have occurred in Canada with Canadian marketed health products.
7: Canadian Adverse Reaction Newsletter 5/24/2005
The Canadian Adverse Reaction Newsletter is a reputable source of adverse reaction information and is published quarterly, in January, April, July and October of each year. This publication alerts health professionals to potential signals detected through the review of case reports submitted to Health Canada. It is a useful mechanism to disseminate information on suspected adverse reactions to health products occurring in humans before comprehensive risk-benefit evaluations and regulatory decisions are undertaken.
8: Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network 6/6/2005
To promote research on the causes of drug-induced liver disease, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases has created the Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network (DILIN). Its purpose is to collect and carefully analyze cases of liver problems caused by prescription drugs and alternative medicines, such as herbal products.

10: FDA Warns Against Women Using Unapproved Drug, Domperidone, to Increase Milk Production 6/10/2004
Feports of cardiac arrhythmias, cardiac arrest, and sudden death in patients receiving an intravenous form of domperidone that has been withdrawn from marketing in a number of countries. Because of the possibility of serious adverse effects, FDA recommends that breastfeeding women not use domperidone to increase milk production.

After careful consideration of the data, NIH has concluded that with an average of nearly 7 years of follow-up completed, estrogen alone does not appear to affect (either increase or decrease) heart disease, a key question of the study. At the same time, estrogen alone appears to increase the risk of stroke and decrease the risk of hip fracture. It has not increased the risk of breast cancer during the time period of the study.
