Guidelines for Use of Vaccines and Immunobiologics in Pregnancy

Note: Live vaccines are generally not administered to pregnant women or those likely to become pregnant within three months of immunization due to the lack of scientific data regarding the potential for adverse fetal effects.

Therefore, health care providers are urged to be vigilant about assessing the pregnancy status of women prior to the administration of any vaccine. Calculation and documentation of the date of the onset of the woman's last menstrual period can be useful information for determining the patient's pregnancy status and for verifying exposure timing should a vaccine be inadvertently administered during pregnancy.
